William Pennell

Back to Staff Page

Pennell, the only name that appears on the photographs, has a Newfoundland name, but a survey of the Pennell's of Trepassey failed to identify anyone from that "Pennell Heartland" associated with the HBC in the 1920's. His personnel records are missing from the HBC Archive (see Davey article) and his service record is constructed from various Post journals for the period 1917 to 1921.

10-08-1917 Pennell arrives at Stupart's Bay to clerk for Livingtone until August 1918. Pennell and Livingstone replaced Cantley (who went to Lake Harbour) and Melton (who went to Cape Dorset).

18-09-1918 Pennell is clerk at Lake Harbour with Cantley until 19-08-1919 when he shows up on the Pelican to clerk for Nichols at Wolstenholme. 21-08-1920 he was at Cape Dorest apparently remaining there until 02-04-1921 when he re-appears at Lake Harbour to "await further orders". The Lake Harbour post journal from May 1921 to June 1922 is no longer in the HBC Archives.
