HBC Staff

Back to Welcome Page

The Lake Harbour Post journal notes the comings and goings of HBC staff throughout the Hudson Strait region, and, it was, suprisingly, quite an active time.
In the first table each staffer's stay at Lake Harbour is shown along with information as to his departure/arrival; destination/origin; and method of travel. A second table shows the periods each staff member was actually at Lake Harbour Post. A third table shows the birth and death dates for the main characters in the Lake Harbour Post journal 1920 to 1921and gives their years of service. Click on names below for individual biographies. Staff ages

What is most remarkable about these men were how young they were. When modern youth are just finishing high school some of these men were employed in key roles in isolated trading posts and, in 1921, some with considerable experience.
Bradbury noted in his book that even after returning from Europe and the Great War at 17 he was told by Parsons that he was too young and should wait a year before going North; however, Manning went North at 14; Learmonth, Cantley, and Nichols at 18; Stewart at 20. Melton alone stands out, not having joined until he was 29 years old.
